The Well-Worn Path
Take Me to the Moon 6.4
Narrated by Fearghus Tesla
When I started down the road of discipline and responsibility, I thought it looked quite pleasant, as the poem mom and dad have read to me so many times says, with a nice stream babbling near, and a grassy path, kind on the feet.
I was working every morning on my strength training
I could feel myself getting stronger, and I looked impressive lifting.
One of the trainers came over, and I thought maybe she was impressed too.
Then she started talking about my form.
She said, if I wasn’t going to lift right, I wasn’t going to lift in her gym.
I showed her my muscles; I thought, you know, with results like this, why harp on form?
She was mad. I caught something about “hostile workplace,” and “these young guys” in her rant.
Whatever. I should have taken the other path, the one that most people take. The one that gets so many people whatever it is they want, for so much easier.
After all, my sister’s got a fiance now, my parents have a great life, and my other sister’s got her own little cottage by the sea and doing whatever she wants all day long.
It was time I had what I wanted.
Fiona had told me about the well in the garden where she proposed to Yuki. She said she wished for luck before she proposed, and it worked for her.
I wished for romance and threw in a coin.
That well gypped me! I looked down into it, wondering if I could get my coin back.
But then, suddenly my anger melted. Mist started to rise and in it, red swirls curled around magically. Mesmerized, I stood there as the ephemeral strands wrapped around me. This was it! I was finally going to get what I wanted!
When the ghostly cords faded, I watched myself confidently get out my phone and dial Alyse’s number. For a long time, I’d wanted to ask her out, but felt too worried about messing up our friendship.
She said yes. After she hung up, I looked into the well and wondered if my wish was going to come true. I felt like I couldn’t fail at romance.
Alyse loves music, so I asked her to meet me at a place near the pier at Magnolia Promenade where there’s live music. When she got there, I felt a strong urge to kiss her hands, kind of the way you see in old movies, where the vampire so charmingly seduces the woman. But instead, I just touched her hands ever so lightly, and looked into her eyes.
She didn’t pull away, or fuss at me, or laugh at me, and I thought, wow, this spell is working. Or whatever it is.
We had a seat and began to talk like we’d never talked before. We’ve made every kind of plan– set loose the gerbils, wrap everything in bacon, everything except our future.
I told Alyse how excited I was about my future, about being a doctor, being looked up to, and making lots of money for our family.
Alyse said she thought creativity and developing our talents was more important than money. She said she tries not to worry too much about what others think of her, because it can keep her from being herself.
“Yeah, that too,” I said. It was clear we headed in the right direction, and we were going to be a match made in heaven. Or in the bottom of a weird freaky well.
I asked her if she wanted to walk out to one of the lookouts, and she said, sure.
We stopped at a little place where you can lookout over the river.
I knew this was the time to kiss her, show her my true feelings, and give her the chance to let go and show how she felt.
I leaned in. She didn’t move.
Then she pulled away and laughed.
She playfully shoved me in the arm.
“Had you going, didn’t I?!” I said.
I’m going to need a refund from that well.
- I didn’t know what would happen with the well, but I felt like it was time to stir things up a bit. Fearghus wished for romance, and what he got was a strong flirty buff and a whim to go on a date. I had him ask Alyse and then followed the contextual wheel to decide what to do next. They did have their first kiss but then Alyse did the “monkey around” interaction as a reaction.
- After they kissed, their relationship screen said Acquaintances, Best Friends, Just Good Friends, but they do have some pink in their bar, so we’ll see what happens next.
- At the club, while they were talking, Fearghus was talking about money and Alyse was talking about art and music.
