Labor Day

Simdale Valley

September 1-3, 605

Narrated by Sheldon Bright

Sheldon and Lillith Bright both turn 42 this season.  Madeline Bright is 10.  James Petite is 33, and Elise Petite is 30.  Harrison Petite is 5 and Helen Petite (not shown) is 2.

The Bright’s Previous Update / The Petite’s Previous Update

We decided to go camping over the Labor Day holiday, before it got really chilly up there in the mountains, and before going back to school.  The leaves had already started to change, and the sky was gorgeous, with that blue that looked like it went on and on forever.

We got there earlier than James and Elise; they wanted to drop Helen off at Moira Jones’ house first.  After we got camp set up, we still had a little light, so Madeline and I played horseshoes while Lillith puttered around, getting dinner started.

But when James and Elise arrived, and Lillith and James joined the game, Madeline went and found her homework, and set herself up at the table.

She was lured away from her reading by the lightning bugs, though.  I asked her to take Harrison with her, because there isn’t anything he loves more than bug collecting.  But she’s 10, and he’s 5, and she just doesn’t like putting up with his babyish ways, she says.

He didn’t run after her, because he’s lost his glasses again, and was having trouble seeing well enough to catch bugs.

Harrison really looks up to Madeline, though.  While Lillith was taking the burgers off the grill, Madeline told everyone her latest story, that she made up, and Harrison hung on every word.

Lillith told him to take a seat by the fire and tried to cheer him up a bit, that things would get easier between him and Madeline as they got older.

We didn’t hear much conversation coming from them during dinner.

Although eventually, Harrison told Madeline about some bugs he found in the meadow at home.

Elise is usually early to bed, and James always goes with her even if he’s not tired, so after the kid went to bed it was just me and Lillith at the fire.

I was thinking, campfire, starry night, chill in the air, great opportunity for some woohoo… but then I started getting dizzy, like I was coming down with something.  But the dizziness passed, and we ended up having some fun in the tent before sleeping after all.

Sure enough, Elise was first up in the morning, with the kids.  I’m sure she made them a healthy breakfast…

And then sent them off to play in the woods around the carmp site.  I think she secretly assigned Madeline to “babysit” Harrison, so she wouldn’t object to playing with him.

Once we woke up and ate, and cleaned up, we had a little bit of time to enjoy the fresh air before we headed home.  We wanted to make it to see the first big PSU game that evening.

“Well, Pumpkin,” I said, “Happy Birthday!”

Mine and Madeline’s birthdays are only a day apart.  Hers was yesterday, and mine’s today.

As soon as we got home, Elise started whipping up a cake for us.

We got it ready just in time for the game to start.  It was so exciting to see the new football season start off!  The PSU Llamas finally have a good coach this year, at least we hope so.  Hopefully, no more boring NFL-style offense game after game.

TS4_x64 2016-04-03 15-32-15-98

During halftime, we sang happy birthday to Madeline, and me.

TS4_x64 2016-04-03 15-32-48-34

By the time the game came back on, Elise, was quite perturbed with the first few plays.

And Lillith was holding her breath to see if our team was about to lose the ball.

Meanwhile, Madeline found a quieter place to read,

in her mom’s office.

And went to bed before anyone realized it.

Gameplay Notes:

  • Madeline and Sheldon both had birthdays during this update, but it wasn’t a transition birthday, so it was pretty low key.  Now my Simdale Valley sims have a proper calendar, they also have annual birthdays, even when they aren’t aging up.
  • These are low key families, and not much happened, so I considered not writing an update for this.  But I enjoy playing them so much, and the camping trip and “Big Game,” were so much fun, I decided to include it.
  • Harrison is supposed to have freckles and glasses, but I had forgotten that until I was writing his profile, and I’d already written the post.  So I’ll add them next time I’m in the game, and update his profile picture.
  • Helen is 2, so since we don’t have toddlers, I just didn’t invite her on the camping trip.  The Brights were the active household so I had no control over James, Elise, and Harrison.  He would have been so into bug collecting!  It was his hobby in Sims 2 and he loves the outdoors in Sims 4.
  • I’m so excited about Fall in Simdale Valley.  It’s so pretty!

  1. Fall is so pretty in Granite Falls (and all of the towns, really). I need to remember to send some of my sims there more often!

I love having low key moments in between the high drama. It makes things feel realistic and balanced. The camping trip looked fun! I’m a bit disappointed that our sims can only bug hunt in Granite Falls. It would be fine, maybe, if there were some special bugs only available there, but it’s sad that they can’t at least catch butterflies and fireflies from anywhere. Maybe they’ll patch it in for us some day!

    • I’ve been really reluctant to add mods to the game because I love how smoothly it runs, but this Autumn mod was well worth it! And me too, I wish they could find some bugs in the other neighborhoods. Since it was a gamepack I figured they wanted people to buy the game pack, so they didn’t just add it to all the neighborhoods, but you’re right, Laura, they could get special bugs there and still get some at home! It seems like the kind of thing they should patch in eventually, butterflies and fireflies in more locations. Thanks so much for commenting!

      • There are season mods? That’s pretty awesome! Now that I have seasons in Sims 3, it’s hard to imagine playing without them. I can understand why Sims 2 players complained all the time about that being missing :).

        • Yes, well there are mods to change the terrain and the flora, but there’s no weather that I know of yet. (The winter mod has snow on the ground). It is a really nice addition.

  2. Carla says:

Wait, do you have seasons now in TS4? I didn’t think you did but Laura’s comment made me second-guess myself! The campsite was very pretty, regardless!

Madeline is a total sweetheart, sneaking off to read and then go to bed. <3 That would have been me as a kid, had I grown up in a much sportier family. My family are all equally uninterested though. 😉

    • Hi Carla, it’s true, we do NOT have seasons yet, but I’m using the Autumn mod by Dani Paradise, which changes the terrain and foliage and flora, but doesn’t add weather. I’m pretty hopeful about getting a seasons expansion in the next year but I could be deluded. I would love something like the Sims 3 festival system, and of course, weather, and I loved the way Sims 2 had special bonuses to skills and relationships in different seasons.

So you were lucky to grow up in a family that enjoyed reading like you? Me too. I enjoy playing Madeleine, and probably enjoy writing her even more. She is getting a bit “on her high horse” about having to play with Harrison though, since he’s five years younger. But she is sweet and thanks to the bookworm trait, sim Madeleine usually acts a lot like I would picture her acting, which is fun.

      • Carla says:

Yes, both my parents and my younger sister are voracious readers, especially my dad. We’re all about the sedentary activities. 😉

I’m glad I’m not that out of the loop about TS4, lol!

        • Right now you could have gone months without hearing any Sims 4 news and be completely up to date on the game. In my opinion a game pack and even an expansion are really overdue and they have said squat since January or February. But on the other hand, it’s kind of nice having a break from their hype. I figure the latest EP must have been pushed back and they decided rather than answer pesky questions, they’d just say nothing.

          • We do have an announcement about something on Tuesday, by the way. It was just revealed a couple days ago and supposedly they’re going to tell us about the next few months worth of content. So yay! I can’t wait to find out what we’re getting.

  3. I saw that we have an announcement and it kind of sounded like it will be more than one item over the next few months so I am looking forward to it although I really hope it isn’t only restaurants. We already have bars/pubs, lounges, nightclubs, cafe’s, and although restaurants would be nice too, I hope that’s not all it is at this point! I like news, and like/love new content, depending on what it is, but like I said unless they are coming out with something great I am really over the hype about basically stuff packs, things like ice cream makers and gardens and big movie screens. Although I usually enjoy something from practically every stuff pack, it annoys me how much they talk about it before it’s released.
